Unofficially referred to as “History Karaoke,” I have created a series of interactive video installations that scrutinize historical speeches from well-known American political figures by encouraging viewer/participants to ‘karaoke’ the speeches. I am drawing not from well-known events or television sound-bites, but from minor episodes that have been seen as turning points in hindsight. I use these speeches as a way to illuminate the contemporary relevance of a particular period in history. While some details vary across the project’s multiple manifestations, most pieces involve a combination of a podium, subtitled source footage, and a video feed of the participant's re-enactment.
